UPMC/JAMESON CANCER CENTER HOSTS “SPRING FLING” TO EDUCATE OUR COMMUNITY & HELP GRANT WISHES FOR CANCER PATIENTS

New Castle, PA - April 9, 2010 UPMC/Jameson Cancer Center has partnered with New Castle Medical Oncology to host a “Spring Fling” event to build awareness of the cancer treatment and support resources available in our community and to raise funds for Unity: A Journey of Hope, a public non-profit organization that grants wishes to adults with a life-limiting illness.

Planning for the event was launched by the inspiration of Jeannie Wells, the new Patient Navigator for the UPMC/Jameson Cancer Center. Ms. Wells leads her patients through the maze that first begins the day of a cancer diagnosis. She helps her patients to obtain cancer education, prepare them for treatments, communicate the community’s support services, identify financial resources, offer transportation assistance and manage work-related issues pertaining to attending medical appointments.

“I was born to do this type of help,” Ms. Wells commented.  “I will be working with the American Cancer Society promoting their programs to our patients.” She went on to explain that she will explore new ways to find financial assistance.  “I will be doing fund-raisers and enlisting aid from Unity: A Journey of Hope.”

The “Spring Fling” Health Fair will be held on Friday, April 23, 2010 , at the UPMC/Jameson Cancer Center and New Castle Oncology at the Medical Arts Building , 2602 Wilmington Road , New Castle , PA 16105 , from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

A health fair will be held from 9am to 2pm . Booth holders include: UPMC/Jameson Cancer Center Radiation/Oncology Patient Navigator Program, Jameson Lung Center Services, UPMC Oncology, Jameson Hospital Women Breast Apparel, Jameson Hospice, Adagio Health, American Caner Society, Colorectal Cancer Education, Southern Care Hospice, Witness Project, Unity: A Journey of Hope, Jameson Health System Breast Health/Digital Mammography and Advanced Health Services.

An agenda of events includes a speaker telling her story of cancer survival, a performance by a cancer-surviving professional singer and American Cancer Society “I Can Cope” seminars. Door prizes and refreshments will be served, a gift basket raffle will be held and specialty candles will be offered for sale.  All proceeds will benefit “Unity: A Journey of Hope.”
