February 17, 2010
- Jameson Health System is proud to announce that
Joseph J. Wizorek, M.D., board certified thoracic surgeon,
has been granted privileges to do Radiofrequency Ablation or RFA
at Jameson. Surrounded
by your family and your family doctor near you, the RFA procedure
can be performed at Jameson in
New Castle
rather than traveling out of town.
Dr. Wizorek joined Rodney Landreneau, M.D. in the
Jameson
Lung
Center
in March 2008.
RFA, radiofrequency ablation, is a useful
alternative treatment for patients with early stage lung cancer
who are unable to undergo conventional lung surgery.
The procedure is done using CT guidance where a small
needle electrode is inserted through the skin directly into the
tumor tissue. Radiofrequency
energy is then passed through the electrode causing the tissue
around the electrode to heat up killing cancer cells. Correct
settings ensure that the heat will destroy all the tumor cells but
very little of the surrounding normal lung tissue.
These patients are admitted after the procedure for
observation for pneumothorax, pain or increased dyspnea.
A graduate of Georgetown University
School of Medicine, Washington, DC, Dr.
Wizorek served his internship and residency in surgery at
Barnes-Jewish
Hospital
in
