New Castle, PA – Jameson Hospital
participated in the NACN Screen for Life study.
This is a national colorectal cancer education program
study published in the journal Preventing Chronic Disease March
16, 2006.
The Lawrence County Cancer Coalition led by
Janice Alberico of the Lawrence County Cooperative Extension and
Mike Matis completed this study.
Members of the Lawrence County Cancer Coalition aiding in
this study were: Peggy
Berkley and Kathy DeCaprio, PA Department of Health, Lisa Mangino,
Jameson Health System, and Marcy Bencivenga, Appalachia Cancer
Network and other Coalition partners.
The results showed that counties with a
cancer coalition had a three-fold increase in participation by
local organization when compared to randomly selected counties
without a cancer coalition. This
study helps document the positive potential impact of local cancer
coalitions in national education campaigns.
Screen for Life, a National Colorectal Cancer
Action Campaign is a multimedia campaign that informs men and
women aged 50 and older about the importance of colorectal cancer
screening. Launched in 1999, the goal of the campaign was to raise
awareness of colorectal cancer screening among all Americans aged
50 years and older.
The use of
educational materials to communicate messages about cancer
screening is important in increasing awareness and providing
valuable health information.
Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of
cancer-related deaths in both the United States and Kentucky.
Those also participating in this study were
the PA Action Health Cancer Task Force, New York’s Chautauqua
County Partners for Prevention, PA Coalition for People Against
Cancer, New York’s Delaware County Cancer Coalition and Greene
County Cancer Coalition, The Lawrence County Cancer Coalition, PA
Rural Snyder Community Cancer Coalition and the PA Wyoming County
Cancer/Tobacco partnership.
