Jameson Health System Expands
Diagnostic Imaging Capabilities with PET/CT
The
Jameson Health System will enhance its current diagnostic imaging
capabilities with the addition of a new, state-of the-art
integrated Positron Emission Tomography and six slice Computed
Tomography (PET/CT) system that offers early and highly accurate
detection of cancer. In
partnership with Neo•pet, LLC, Jameson will begin providing
PET/CT scanning services at its South Campus.
PET/CT (Positron Emission Tomography with Computed Tomography) allows
doctors to diagnose, better prescribe treatment, and monitor
disease in a single procedure.
PET/CT
is a diagnostic procedure that produces three-dimensional pictures
of the body’s sugar metabolism.
Unlike computed tomography (CAT or CT) images alone which
depict the size and structure of internal organs, PET/CT shows the
differences in tissue metabolism matched to the specific body
structures. This is
particularly useful in assessing certain types of cancers, heart
disease, and brain disorders since changes in metabolism often
occur well before changes in body tissue’s size or structure.
Positron
Emission Tomography (PET/CT) is most commonly used in oncology to determine if a patient has cancer, the extent of the
disease, or to assess the effectiveness of a treatment.
PET/CT aids physicians by:
- Visualizing small tumors (possibly smaller than ¼ of an inch) to
allow for early diagnosis
- Determining how far the cancer has spread for the selection of the
most appropriate treatment (this
process is called staging)
- Verifying the effectiveness of a therapy or treatment
- Detecting a recurrence of cancer
PET/CT
provides physicians with highly accurate information about the
malignancy of a cancer and its location that can influence
treatment decisions. Using
PET/CT may result in more effective therapies and improved
outcomes, while possibly avoiding more invasive exams or
surgeries. “PET/CT
will have a major impact on our clinical evaluations of cancer
patients, and in many cases will enable our physicians to begin
treatment earlier and increase the odds for successful patient
outcomes,” said Linda Cody-Jaskolka, Jameson Health System’s
Director of Public Relations.
“Physicians
and health care organizations understand the tremendous impact
that PET/CT technology can have in delivering high quality,
cost-effective health care, especially in the oncology field,”
said Cody-Jaskolka. “Jameson’s
investment in PET/CT technology shows we understand the powerful
impact PET/CT can have on patients’ lives.”
With
300 beds, Jameson operates as a full-service acute care facility
offering a full continuum of health and human services in New
Castle, Lawrence County.
To
meet the needs of the public, the Jameson Medical Imaging
Department is accepting appointments and has convenient operation
hours.
