at their campus. WalkAmerica
is the biggest fund raiser for the March of Dimes.
Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes is a national voluntary
health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by
preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
It supports research and programs to help prevent or treat
premature birth, birth defects and other threats to infant health.
Local business leaders, walkers and families
touched by the mission of the March of Dimes gathered at the
Jameson South Campus to plan for a successful walk. WalkAmerica
will be held on April 29 at
Cascade
Park
at
9 am
.
Dale Turner of National City Bank welcomed the group and
explained that 12% of babies born in the
United States
are born prematurely. He
said the March of Dimes is very well respected and 92 cents of
every dollar raised by March of Dimes goes to research.
“This is a building year for
Lawrence
County
,” Turner said. Every walker’s personal goal this year is
$200. He said $17,000 was raised last year by local residents and
the goal this year is $22,000.
He encouraged participants to get creative.
Jameson Health System Public Relations
Director, Susan Galvin, said “the hospital is so proud to be
host of the kick-off event and help sponsor such an important
cause.” “We need
to make sure that we participate in every effort to ensure that
our greatest resource, our newborns, are given a healthy start in
life.”
