PACS
Medical Imaging Obtains New Technology
Beginning May 23rd,
Jameson will join the trend of large hospital networks who are
replacing X-ray films with digital images to help improve quality
of patient care and reduce delays in service. This new technology
is better known as a digital Picture Archiving and Communications
System (PACS). This
is a major step in enabling Jameson’s network of physicians to
better serve our community.
This combination of
image-centric PACS and a radiology information system (RIS)
will enable Jameson Hospital to seamlessly transmit images and
radiology reports all over our testing facilities in a completely
digital environment. With digital imaging, doctors can immediately
look up patients and review their images via a computer, laptop,
or personal data assistant from virtually anywhere – the
physician's office, the emergency room, the operating room, or
even the physician's home, instead of waiting for film to be
retrieved from a storage room and delivered to the doctors.
This reduces delays
by cutting the time spent searching for files, film, or patient
information among various departments.
In addition, a doctor who needs a specialist’s opinion
can electronically transmit a digital X-ray or other images to a
hospital or clinic anywhere in the world, making it much easier
for physicians to consult on difficult cases. Jameson’s patients
will benefit because we will have immediate access to images. Our
vision is to use technology to enable patient care improvements.
A recent study
showed that faster cycle times result from electronic ordering and
imaging display systems. One study found that cycle times at a
major university hospital dropped 43 percent for radiology orders
– from 7:37 hours to 4:21 hours.
In turn, reduced cycle time helps reduce a patient's length
of stay and overall costs.
All
requests for images will be made available on CD for release to
patients, physicians, etc. If
films are needed, please request films to be printed. A 24-hour
notice is requested for this service. For more information about
Jameson’s Radiology Services, please call 724-656-4127.
