Colon
cancer is the third most common cancer in men and women, and the
second leading cause of cancer death among men and women in the
United States
.
If you are age 50 and older, you may be at
risk for colon cancer and should talk to your doctor about
screening options. Early
detection is key and may increase the five-year survival rate to
approximately 90 percent, and if found early, can be highly
curable.
People with a family or personal history of
colon cancer or polyps or a history of chronic inflammatory bowel
disease should be tested earlier and may need to undergo testing
frequently. The
American Cancer Society recommends that people age 50 and older
get a colonoscopy once every ten years.
One of the most powerful weapons in
preventing colorectal cancer is regular cancer screening and
testing. For more
information on colon cancer, contact the American Cancer Society
