FEDERAL INCOME TAX CREDITS
The
American Opportunity Credit (Under the American Recovery
and Reinvestment Act) modifies the existing Hope Credit
for tax years 2009 and 2010. In addition to tuition
and fees, it adds required course materials to the list of
qualifying expenses and allows the credit to be claimed for
four post-secondary education years instead of two.
Many students may qualify for the maximum annual credit of
$2,500 per student.
The
full credit is available to individuals whose modified
adjusted gross income is $80,000 or less, or $160,00 or less
for married couples filing a joint return. (These
income levels are higher than the income levels for the
existing Hope and Lifetime Learning Credits)
NOTE: The HOPE CREDIT is available for student meeting the
special rules for the mid-western disaster areas.
The
Lifetime Learning Credit for 2009 is gradually
reduced (phased out) if the modified adjusted gross income
(MAGI) is between $50,000 and $60,000 ($100,000 and $120,000
for a joint return.) A lifetime learning tax credit of
up to $2,000 may be claimed for qualified education expenses
paid for eligible students. There is no limit on the
number of years the lifetime learning credit can be claimed
for each student.
